The City Cutbacks That Need to Go

May 14, 2025

One of the biggest pushbacks San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is getting to his proposed budget cuts is over something as basic as you can get.

With the city facing more than a one quarter billion dollar budget deficit, they are looking at all kinds of cutbacks affecting everything from street repairs, to police, libraries and the park hours.

But the cut that is getting a lot of attention are bathrooms, the public bathrooms at Mission Bay and Balboa Park with some city residents speaking out about not being happy with reducing hours or just closing bathrooms.

You’ve heard from some of the people who spend time around Mission Bay.

And now this week, a letter writer to the San Diego Union Tribune who describes herself as a volunteer ambassador at Balboa Park said the idea of cutting the number of restrooms in the park is “insulting to thousands of visitors from all over the world…and every part of San Diego County.” And she adds, “Does anyone planning the budget think about the consequences of these cuts?”

When a city is facing a big deficit like San Diego, it does what it has to do to make cuts. But when you have to go, you have to go.
