On Saturday (May 17), a Mexican Navy training ship, the Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing significant damage and leaving multiple crew members injured. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. when one of the ship's towering 147-foot masts struck the bridge's road deck, toppling into the ship and the water below. At least 23 people were reportedly injured, including three who are in critical condition.

The Cuauhtémoc, which has a crew of 277, was in New York City as part of a promotional event for the upcoming Sail4th tall ship celebration marking America's 250th birthday. Following the crash, a search and rescue operation was launched to assist those affected. Victims in critical condition were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, while others were taken to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The Mexican Navy confirmed the incident and stated that the status of personnel and equipment is being assessed by naval and local authorities. The Navy emphasized its commitment to the safety of its personnel and transparency in operations.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, with questions arising about whether the ship's captain was aware of the bridge's clearance height.

Videos of the crash were posted on TikTok and X.
