Why the Palm Springs Bombing is a Call for Action

May 19, 2025

The backstory of the young man who set off the explosion at the Fertility Center in Palm Springs this past weekend is a story of someone who was a human time bomb just waiting to go off.

It is similar to other stories of someone with mental illness carrying out a suicidal act of violence.

Fortunately, this time no innocent people lost their lives.

As we now have heard, in his own words on line, the reason he did it was because of a twisted view of life and the fertility center where promoting life is what it’s all about, became a target for a man who was not well.

His father, told the New York Times Sunday, that when his son was nine years old, he once lit the family house on fire while playing with matches and as a teenager, he made “stink bombs” and “smoke bombs.”

The 75-year-old dad told the Times that he was shocked when a relative texted him to tell him that his son was the one who blew up the bomb and took his own life with it.

Mental health experts say this story and others like it are reasons to sound another alarm about the need for more to be done to prevent, detect and treat mental illness in our country.
