Ralph DeLeo, a former "street boss" of the Colombo crime family, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly plotting to kill three federal officials involved in his 2012 conviction. The 82-year-old was released from prison last year under supervised release after serving time for racketeering.
According to federal prosecutors, DeLeo was actively seeking personal information, including home addresses, of the officials as part of his "retribution." A search of his residence revealed "hard copy packets" of this information, along with a burglary kit, marijuana, vials of steroids, and a note about silicone masks. The FBI also discovered that DeLeo was communicating with known felons, including codefendants from his previous case.
DeLeo's criminal history dates back to the 1970s when he was an associate of the Patriarca crime family. His past crimes include armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, and a murder during a kidnapping for hire. Despite his age, prosecutors argue that DeLeo remains a danger due to his history of violence and his recent actions.
Prosecutors have requested that DeLeo be detained, citing his long and violent criminal record. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday (May 22) to determine whether he should remain in custody. DeLeo's defense attorneys have requested his release, citing health issues that require medical attention.
