A San Diego Memorial Day to Remember

May 27, 2025

Memorial Day 2025 will be remembered by several thousand people in San Diego as the day of the great freeway backup.

If you were one of those who were stuck in it, you may talk about it one day with your kids or even your grandkids.

We heard from many of our listeners for a couple of hours Monday who were calling to let us know where they were stuck and for how long they’d been stuck not moving or just barely moving for up to 90 minutes or even more.

When both sides of a major freeway like Interstate 5 are shutdown in an area where north and south travel on a holiday often can already be heavy with people coming and going to beaches and family get togethers, it became what one CHP sergeant called it, a “traffic nightmare”.

When you’re struck in a situation like that, you can’t move forward, can’t turn around, and can’t get off, sitting in your car on a freeway like that had to be at least a frustrating experience and at the worst, a big case of anxiety.

Some people are better at dealing with something like this than others. And it was kind of surprising how many drivers who called in were not as stressed out as you might expect.

And while the pursuit and the standoff ended fortunately without any innocent person getting hurt, it’ll be a day a lot of people in San Diego probably will never forget.
