A Long Island family made a shocking discovery on Sunday (May 25) when they uncovered a dead body in their backyard pool in East Shoreham, New York. The Suffolk County Police Department is investigating whether the body belongs to Matthew Zoll, a 23-year-old fugitive accused of murdering his father, Joseph Zoll, in November.
The homeowner found the body while preparing the pool for the summer season and immediately called 911. Neighbors expressed their shock and speculated about the identity of the deceased. According to WNBC, the Suffolk County Medical Examiner is working to confirm the identity and cause of death.
Matthew Zoll has been on the run since allegedly stabbing his father in their Rocky Point home. After the incident, he reportedly fled in a black GMC Yukon, which he crashed near William Floyd Parkway, about a half-mile from where the body was found. The New York Post reports that police believe Zoll may have tried to hide under the pool cover, leading to his death from drowning or other causes.
The discovery has reignited community interest in the case, which had previously involved a large-scale search by US Marshals. The investigation continues as authorities await autopsy results to confirm the identity of the body.
