Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has signed two significant tax relief bills, including the state's largest-ever income tax cut and a $1 billion special rebate. Eligible taxpayers in Georgia can anticipate receiving rebates ranging from $250 to $500 soon after the extended tax filing deadline in early May. According to Georgia's Department of Revenue, the one-time tax refund will be issued based on specific criteria outlined in House Bill 112. Payments are expected to be distributed following the processing of 2024 state returns.
To qualify, residents must have filed Georgia individual income tax returns for both 2023 and 2024. Full-year residents will receive the full rebate amount, while part-year and nonresident filers will receive a proportional amount based on their taxable income in Georgia. Single filers and married individuals filing separately can receive up to $250, head of household filers up to $375, and married couples filing jointly up to $500.
The rebates will not be considered taxable income under Georgia law. However, they may be reduced if the recipient has outstanding debts to the state, such as delinquent taxes or child support. Governor Kemp expressed gratitude to the legislature for supporting the tax relief initiative, emphasizing its importance for hardworking Georgians.
