Why Dan + Shay Took 'A Long Social Media Hiatus' Spanning Several Months

Dan + Shay inadvertently took “a long social media hiatus.”

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney addressed that break — and hinted at what’s next — in a lengthy Instagram caption on Wednesday (May 28). Smyers and Mooney started by expressing their excitement and gratitude for their 8th American Music Award victory (they won the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the 2025 show on Monday, May 26). They went on to address a months-long “hiatus” on social media after they released It’s Officially Christmas: The Double Album, Dan + Shay’s first-ever holiday project that they’d teased for about a decade. The duo thanked fans for “being patient” as they work on “our favorite music we’ve ever made,” in between moments at home with family. Dan + Shay wrote:

“We won our 8th American Music Award, and it’s all because of YOU. Thank you for voting for us, and for continuing to show up for us year after year. We are grateful beyond what we could ever put into words. Truly. PS - we didn’t mean to take a long social media hiatus after the double Christmas album blitz lol. We’ve just been riding a big, big wave of inspiration in the studio - making our favorite music we’ve ever made - and enjoying being at home with our families. We’ll be back on here spamming y’all as soon as it’s ready, but in the meantime, thanks for being patient with us and allowing us to take our time. It’s important for us to always give you our very best, and we promise we’re working our a**es off to make sure that’s exactly what we do. Here’s to you, again, for helping us win the award, and here’s to everything that’s to come. All the love and gratitude. ❤️”

Smyers recently celebrated eight years of marriage with wife Abby Smyers. Abby shared in a heartfelt anniversary tribute at the time, “I love more than words could ever properly convey.” Mooney and his wife, Hannah Mooney, welcomed Baby No. 4 earlier this year. Son Aubrey Ellis joined big brothers Asher James, 8, Ames Alexander, 5, and Abram Shay, 2. Dan + Shay have yet to share sneak peeks of new music as of publication time on Thursday (May 29).
