Will the City's New Parking Plan Solve the Problem?
June 3, 2025
We hear a lot about the problems in San Diego about home and rental prices and homelessness and traffic, and now the parking problem is front and center.
With the San Diego City Council passing what is being seen as a sweeping change in rules about parking, after many citizens expressed their views at the council meeting this week, the debate over what to do about the cost and availability of parking has definitely heated up.
And why not? Go to the beach and it can be hard to find a parking space. Go to the Gaslamp Quarter downtown and if you can find a space, you often have to move your vehicle in two hours and if you’re downtown during a Padre game, it can easily cost you 50 dollars or even a 100 bucks to find a parking space, depending on where it is.
And in neighborhoods, with lots of multiple housing units and Accessory Dwelling Units, it can be hard to park near where you live.
Add to all that the problem of finding a parking place in Balboa Park, especially on weekends, can be a really frustrating challenge.
Only time will tell if these changes being approved by the council will reduce the time it takes to find a parking space when you need it.
