Police have arrested a New Jersey man who is suspected to have stolen two "irreplaceable" instruments from Heart at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City last week. According to NBC10, authorities were able to identify the man as 57-year-old Garfield Bennett from surveillance video captured at 2am on May 30. He was later seen on video attempting to sell the instruments in various places around Atlantic City.
Bennett was arrested on June 4 and charged with burglary and theft. He has a long criminal record and was previously arrested for burglary in April. Before he was apprehended, Bennett was able to successfully sell one of the instruments. Heart stated that the stolen instruments were a “custom-built, one-of-a-kind purple sparkle baritone Telecaster with a hand-painted headstock, crafted specifically for [guitarist] Nancy Wilson” and a “vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin” that multi-instrumentalist Paul Moak has played for over a quarter century." It's unclear which instrument is still missing.
Police are urging anyone in possession of the stolen instrument to contact Atlantic City Police and surrender it. Failure to do so could lead to an arrest for receiving stolen property.
Heart is currently on an intimate "an evening with..." tour, which is set to go wrap up on June 28. Then the band plans to hit the road again for a summer tour in August.
