Woman Walks Out After Date’s “Gold Digger Test” at Dinner

June 5, 2025

A story on Reddit has people talking about dating etiquette and red flags. A woman went on a first date that seemed normal. She and her date enjoyed a nice dinner, laughed, and shared stories. The bill came to about one hundred dollars. Instead of reaching for his wallet, the man slid the check across the table and calmly asked her to pay.

The woman did not mind covering the meal. She agreed and pulled out her card. That is when the man smiled and said, “Congrats, you passed the test. You are not a gold digger.” He explained that an ex-girlfriend always expected him to pay, so he now “tests” new dates by making them pick up the tab.

The woman was not impressed. She told him she was not his ex and that treating someone like a suspect on the first date was disrespectful. After paying, she thanked the waiter, stood up, and left. In follow-up posts she said the man kept calling and texting, but she blocked his number. She added that she has a good career, owns property, and is financially independent, so the “test” felt insulting.
