CNN national correspondent Jason Carroll was "detained" by police during his live coverage of large scale anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles Monday (June 9) night.
“I am being detained," Carroll was head saying while shown in handcuffs and walked out of the area by police during a live shot on an extended edition of Laura Coates Live.
“I’m not being arrested, correct, officers?” he was heard asking officers.
“Did you hear what he told you?” the officer asked Carroll.
"No," he replied.
“We’re letting you go, but you can’t come back,” the officer responded. “Because then if you come back in, then you go. Ok, please?”
“Ok, thank you, officer,” Carroll replied before once again addressing Coates.
“So here’s what happened, Laura,” he said. “I was called over, and the officer told me to put my hands behind my back. I said, ‘Am I being arrested?’ He said, ‘You are being detained.’ I was walked out of the area. They took down my information.”
Carroll's audio suddenly cutoff before CNN Chief Law Enforcement Analyst John Miller further explained the situation.
“You have anarchist groups and agitators who show up and say, ‘Well, I have a blog, so therefore I’m press. So therefore, even though I’ve been throwing bottles and screaming epithets, I’m not part of the protest. I want to be treated as media.’ So they sort through people one at a time," Miller said.

The incident involving Carroll took place hours after Australian news reporter Lauren Tomasi was shot with a rubber bullet during her coverage of the protests on Sunday (June 8).

Tomasi, a U.S. correspondent for Nine News, appeared to have concluded her live shot when she was "caught in the crossfire" of the Los Angeles Police Department as an officer fired rubber bullets at protesters in downtown Los Angeles, the news station wrote in a clip shared of the incident on social media. The reporter, who wasn't wearing personal protective equipment at the time, appeared to grab her lower leg after shouting in pain as the cameraman quickly panned while they moved away from the police line.
"You just f**king shot the reporter," a voice off-camera was heard yelling.
Tomasi reassured her crew that she was fine despite the incident, telling them, "Yeah, I'm good, I'm good" in the clip.
President Donald Trump had already deployed 2,000 National Guard troops before U.S. officials announced that 700 Marines arrived in Los Angeles overnight as protests continued on Monday (June 9). The protests followed demonstrations over ICE operations across the city on Friday (June 6) after federal agents raided multiple workplaces resulting in hundreds of people, including children, being detained, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
Large crowds gathered near the federal building on Friday, which resulted in some clashes with authorities, while was followed by protests on Saturday where Border Patrol agents were posted up nearby, resulting in more clashes with demonstrators and footage showing smoke projectiles being deployed.
