Is San Diego's Budget Battle Blowing Up?

June 11, 2025

It looks like the budget battle at San Diego City Hall is far from over.

For the last couple of months, Mayor Todd Gloria has laid out his plan on how much to spend and what to cut to help reduce a huge budget deficit.

And his proposals have taken hits from several directions and while the City Council has voted 7-2 to approve a budget, it restored lots of things that the wanted cut, from beach bathrooms and beach fire pits to libraries and rec centers.

The council’s plan would restore cuts but would mean the city would start charging for parking in Balboa Park and at the San Diego Zoo sooner than expected and charging credit card fees at city parking meters, things a lot of voters certainly won’t like.

So now the mayor is hinting that he may not sign the new budget and try to veto parts of it.

They say that good government is about compromise, when neither side gets all they want but some of what they want.

Now we will see if our city leaders in San Diego can do a better job doing that than our divided leaders in Washington have done.
