A Military Town and the Military Debate

June 12, 2025

San Diego has been known as a military town for a very long time, going back to World War II at least.

We have more Navy and Marine bases than any other city and we have tens of thousands of active duty military personnel stationed here and hundreds of thousands of military veterans living across from the county from Mission Beach to Borrego Springs and from Chula Vista to Oceanside.

And all of them, from the newest recruits to the oldest retired ones are or have given up a lot to serve and defend us from foreign enemies and they love their country.

Now, in light of what’s been happening in Los Angeles with the immigration enforcement protests some of their voices are being heard right now, pro and con, in the debate over whether the use of active duty Marines and the federalizing of the California National Guard were right moves or wrong moves.

Those who serve in the U.S. military take a vow to defend the country, follow orders and abide by the constitution.

They are dedicated men and women, some of whom, find themselves right the middle of that debate as some of them find themselves right in the middle of what’s happening in the second largest city in the United States of America.
