There is No Place Like the Newly Renovated Hotel del Coronado
June 19, 2025
It is one of the places that attracts visitors to San Diego as well as drawing new and longtime residents of San Diego County to it.
It’s the 137 year old Hotel del Coronado. There really is nothing quite like the Hotel Del.
And now with its six year long 550-million dollar restoration, this historic landmark will probably become even more popular.
As one of the hotel officials told the San Diego Union Tribune this week, “The reality is it was old and needed a restoration. It also has a cult following so you didn’t know what to expect” but adds, “People are just blown away by it.”
The Hotel Del Coronado has been doing that for a very long time.
At its 100th birthday back in 1988, it was turned into a modern day Land of Oz, as a way to mark its link to writer L. Frank Baum, who as a frequent visitor, used the hotel as inspiration for the Emerald City in his Wizard of Oz.
Now here in 2025, the Hotel Del has become a place where visitors can still go back into time to discover and explore its rich history while those of us who live in San Diego, are reminded of those memorable words from Dorothy, there’s no place like home.
