President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran on Monday (June 23), following a 12-day conflict marked by missile exchanges. The ceasefire was brokered with the assistance of Qatar, which mediated talks between the two nations.
According to CNN, the ceasefire agreement requires Iran to halt its attacks on Israel, a condition that both parties have reportedly accepted. President Trump communicated directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while Vice President JD Vance and other officials negotiated with Iran through Qatar.
The announcement comes after Iranian missiles targeted a U.S. base in Qatar, which was intercepted by Qatari air defenses. In response, Israel launched attacks on Tehran. Despite the tensions, President Trump praised both countries for their "Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence" in agreeing to end the conflict.
"This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The ceasefire is set to be phased in over 24 hours, with Iran starting the ceasefire and Israel following 12 hours later. President Trump thanked the Emir of Qatar for his role in facilitating the agreement, which aims to prevent further escalation in the region. While neither the Israeli nor Iranian governments have officially confirmed the ceasefire, U.S. officials remain optimistic about its implementation.
