What the New City Budget Could Mean for Balboa Park

June 24, 2025

The debates in front of the City Council over the new fiscal year budget for the City of San Diego are over with the spending plan now approved by a majority of council members.

But the arguing over it and what happens next are not.

In a report by the Voice of San Diego, which closely follows what happens at City Hall, they point out that what Mayor Gloria wants you to know that if things don’t pan out with budget projections, it’s the City Council’s fault.

The mayor himself, in a statement after the vote, said “While the Council has now chosen to partially override certain vetoes, I remain concerned that these actions could still weaken our ability to stay on stable financial footing.

And the Voice of San Diego says that what the City Council President is saying is that he stands ready to schedule votes on budget changes as needed – and ahead of quarterly budget updates if necessary.

But the council appears to be standing firm on one of the most controversial budget items…a move to paid parking in Balboa Park.

Members of the public and the people who run all the museums in the park are not happy with that idea. Odds are that’s going to be something that could run into a rough road.
