Daniel Jongyon Park, a man charged in connection with the bombing of a California fertility clinic, died by suicide while in custody. According to a statement from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Park was found unresponsive on Tuesday (June 24) at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. Despite life-saving efforts by staff and emergency medical services, he was declared dead by hospital personnel.
Park was arrested earlier this month at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York after returning from Poland. Federal authorities accused him of supplying chemicals to make explosives used in the bombing of the American Reproductive Centers in Palm Springs, California, in May. Prosecutors alleged that Park shipped 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate to Guy Bartkus, the suspected bomber. Days before the bombing on May 17, Park ordered an additional 90 pounds of the chemical to be sent to Bartkus.
The investigation into the bombing is ongoing, and authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the attack. Park's death adds a new layer of complexity to the case as officials work to determine any further connections or motives behind the bombing.
