A Ukrainian lawmaker who called for President Donald Trump to receive a Nobel Peace Prize has withdrawn his nomination.

Last November, Oleksandr Merezhko, the head of Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee, nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump had promised to end the Russian-Ukrainian war within 24 hours of taking office, but after five months, the two countries have still not agreed to a peace deal. Merezhko said he "lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to get a ceasefire deal done between Russia and Ukraine.

On Tuesday (June 24), Merezhko said he had withdrawn his Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Trump, per Newsweek.

Russia and Ukraine agreed in principle to a limited ceasefire in March, but no peace deal was formally reached. Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a 30-day ceasefire that Trump advocated for and Ukraine had agreed to.

Earlier this month, Ukraine launched a massive drone attack against Russia and blew up a section of the Kerch Bridge that connects the country with the annexed Crimean Peninsula. Russia launched an attack on Kyiv last week, which reportedly killed 28 people and injured over 100.

In May, Trump was reportedly considering imposing additional sanctions against Russia, but didn't follow through.

Merezhko said Trump "is evading—he is dodging—the need to impose sanctions on Russia” and that he “has chosen the path of appeasement.”
