A video shared online shows utility worker dangling over a busy intersection after being struck by an 18-wheeler while repairing a stoplight.
The footage, which was filmed by a driver stopped at the red light and credited to Bill Atkinson by WBRZ, shows a large tractor-trailer turn into the outside lane and smash the bucket truck arm holding the utility worker after getting off the I-12 exit ramp onto Range Avenue in Denham Springs, Louisiana, located about 18 miles east of Baton Rouge. The impact bumped the utility worker around in his basket, which partially broke off the arm and left him flying upside down.
The utility worker was still tethered to the bucket but left hanging over the roadway as a co-worker rushed to save him from potentially serious injuries. Debris and tools were scattered at the scene of the crash.
“That is a mandate we have: When you’re in that bucket truck, you’ll have that harness on,” said Fred Raiford, East Baton Rouge Parish director of transportation, via WBRZ.
Raiford said he was unaware of how the 18-wheeler would've made the turn without striking the bucket truck or a pole located on the other side of the road. The utility worker was reported to have sustained minor injuries but avoided hospitalization, according to the Denham Springs Police Department.
