The Problem With Our Beaches

July 3, 2025

The July 4th weekend means a lot of people go to our local beaches along the San Diego coastline. And with plans to go to the beach also come concerns about beach closings or advisories at some local beaches due to sewage spills.

Unfortunately, we have become used to seeing those yellow warning signs along some of our beaches, especially the ones from the border…along Imperial Beach, the Silver Strand and parts of Coronado with those signs often up a lot in those areas.

While reports for this holiday weekend say that so far there are no closures or advisories for San Diego’s most popular beaches, the county has declared beach advisories for La Jolla Children’s Pool and a Cardiff beach near San Elijo Lagoon.

When you see one of those signs it means there is a high level of bacteria that can make you sick and that you need to make your own decision of whether it is safe, personally, for you to swim in that water.

One of these days or one of these years, the biggest sewage problem, we all hope the one near the border along South Bay beaches will be solved.

It won’t be for this weekend, but it can’t happen soon enough.
