How to Avoid Another Deadly Flooding Disaster

July 8, 2025

The deadly and unprecedented flash flood in central Texas has stirred up debate over how it happened, why it happened and what to do to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

While there have been flood disasters in the past, this one has been called one of the worst, even worse than what you have heard described as once in 100 year events.

The Texas Hill Country is often referred to as “flash flood alley” with steep terrain and a lack of the kind of vegetation that can create a perfect storm for flood waters to rise.

With the number and size of storms increasing, according to experts, there are a lot of loud calls now for changes in how to be better prepared for such events.

A plan for flash flood warning sirens, that in recent years was rejected because of funding, will now undoubtedly be revived.

And there are calls for restoring some federal funding to the National Weather Service that was hit by lots of staff cutbacks earlier this year including some emergency weather coordinators.

It shouldn’t always have to take a disaster to lead to changes but it too often does, and sometimes, like what happened in central Texas, it comes at a deadly cost.
