A tragic incident occurred at the Milan Bergamo Airport on Tuesday (July 8) when a 35-year-old man died after being sucked into a jet engine. The man, who was not a passenger or airport staff member, reportedly broke onto the runway as a Volotea Airlines jet was preparing for takeoff to Spain. He reportedly entered the runway through a security door after abandoning his car near the terminal.

The incident, which occurred around 10:20 a.m. local time, led to the suspension of flight operations at the airport for nearly two hours. Local reports suggest that the man may have intended to take his own life, though this remains under investigation by law enforcement authorities.

Volotea Airlines confirmed that the aircraft involved was an Airbus A319 carrying 154 passengers and six crew members. The airline is working closely with Italian authorities and providing support to affected passengers and crew. The tragic event led to the diversion of nine flights and the cancellation of 19 others.

The airport authority and law enforcement are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
