Former White House physician Kevin O'Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment during a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday (July 9). The committee, led by Chairman James Comer, is investigating allegations of a cover-up regarding former President Joe Biden's health while in office.
O'Connor's interview ended abruptly after less than an hour, with the doctor refusing to answer questions about his time with President Biden. He was asked if he was ever instructed to lie about the president's health and whether he believed Biden was unfit for duty. He pleaded the Fifth Amendment to both questions.
The doctor's lawyers stated that his refusal to answer was not an admission of guilt but a response to the committee's broad investigatory scope, which they argued could violate patient-physician privilege. They emphasized that revealing confidential information could breach ethical duties and result in legal consequences for O'Connor.
The committee is examining whether Biden's aides concealed evidence of his mental and physical decline. While Biden's allies deny these claims, Comer's comments suggest that O'Connor's actions may indicate otherwise. Comer stated, "Most people invoke the Fifth when they have criminal liability."
Despite O'Connor's refusal to testify, Comer assured that the investigation would continue, with plans to interview additional witnesses. Meanwhile, O'Connor's legal team has requested a pause in the committee's investigation while a Department of Justice probe is underway.
