Chris Young shared his reaction to a “crazy story” on America’s Got Talent.
Austin Brown, formerly part of an a cappella group, auditioned for the NBC competition show with “When A Man Loves A Woman.” Celebrity judge Simon Cowell admitted his decision “is not going to make me popular. I’m going to say no.”
Rather than getting on a flight back to Nashville, Tennessee, Brown opted to stay in Los Angeles, California. He scored another audition time and returned in front of the panel of judges — Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Howie Mandel and Mel B — three days after they turned him down. Cowell admitted he expected Brown to return “in a year,” rather than a matter of days.
Brown explained of his first audition, per NBC, that he “did what I thought the judges wanted me to do instead of just being myself.” Instead, Brown chose an original song, titled “Somebody Believed,” for his second audition.
“It’s all an uphill battle until the day it ain’t/ It’s all something to be scared of until the day you’re brave”
Mandel complimented Brown’s “beautiful voice,” and Mel B applauded the original ballad. Vergara noticed the “big difference” between Brown’s first audition and his second.
“This is you. It feels organic,” she said. “It was what you were meant to always be singing. And you looked like you were enjoying yourself.”
Cowell also changed his tune after hearing Brown’s second performance. The former a cappella group singer advanced with unanimous yeses from the judges and applause from the crowd. Young, who recently announced his 10th studio record, shared the audition on his Instagram story on Wednesday (July 9). He spotlighted the “crazy story and crazy vocals,” and congratulated Brown on his successful AGT audition. Watch it here:
