Texas Governor Compares Flood Crisis to Football After 100 Deaths

July 10, 2025

Texas is dealing with one of the worst natural disasters in recent history. Flash floods across Central Texas have killed more than 100 people, and many families are still missing loved ones or trying to rebuild their homes.

When asked who should be held responsible for the damage, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made headlines with his response. On Tuesday, July 10, Abbott used a football analogy instead of directly answering the question.

“Every inch of the Lone Star State loves their football—high school, college, or NFL,” Abbott said. “And Texans should take a cue from their favorite teams and not resort to blaming others when things go wrong.”

He went on to say that every team makes mistakes, but winners focus on how they respond, not who’s to blame. While some praised his positive spin, others felt his comments lacked accountability.

As cleanup continues, local leaders and residents are urging the state to invest more in emergency response systems.
