TGIF Blogcast: Delete your 23&Me data; Is it Amnesty?; Trafficking Children

July 11, 2025

Just One Thing: I think 23andMe clients should do this

I talked about this and did it myself a few months ago in anticipation of bankruptcy and possible acquisition of 23andMe.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has put out a step-by-step guide on how to delete your data before the acquisition happens, even though the acquiring company promises to protect the data.

We'll discuss this distressing story. I can't judge whether there is really some terrible stuff going on here, paid for by the US government, or whether it's a conspiracy theory.

Other Stuff

Following up on the timely conversation I had with Josh Hammer yesterday: MAGA on "amnesty watch" as Trump weighs migrant worker protections

This Gallup poll might help Trump decide to tell ICE to back off on some of the most aggressive enforcement against illegal aliens at their places of work (those who haven't been charged with crimes, I mean): Surge in U.S. Concern About Immigration Has Abated

This will be the trick if Trump really wants to thread the needle between immigration enforcement and not wrecking certain industries: finding a way to define some new work visa program as something other than amnesty: "Not Amnesty Lite": Trump's new plan for migrant worker visas

I have no idea if this is common but the legacy media will make it seem common and I remain convinced that this is political poison for the GOP: Trump supporter with green card who was in US since age 3 denied reentry

I agree with Rogan: Joe Rogan ‘pushed Trump to back off on mass deportations’ at a dinner before slamming him over ICE raids

What's your take? What if the applicant is a 20-yr-old illegal immigrant who was brought here at the age of 2, went to high school here, only knows the US as home, and wants to build a future and be a productive part of the US economy? To me this is reminiscent of Milton Friedman's warning that you can open borders or an open welfare system but not both. Will talk about this more today...I just don't think this stuff will play well with voters even as most Americans say they want more immigration reform. I suspect that outside of the hardcore Trump base, most Americans aren't OK with aggressive workplace enforcement against workers who haven't committed crimes in this country.

And this: With expired work permits, couple who fled Haiti leans on Texas church that brought them here+

To be clear: The dominant liberal media will run LOTS of these stories and perhaps make them seem more common than they are, though I suspect that at this point they are fairly common. It will impact the national discussion and it will cause some (but only some) Republican members of Congress to push Trump to back off of enforcement of non-criminals. (And don't waste my time by saying that every illegal alien is by definition a criminal; you know that's not my point.)

Of course, the decisions should truly be mission-based and not solely cost-cutting, though that is of course also a legit goal. Just not the only consideration for a dept like this.
