Decision Made On Trey Smith's Future With Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly reached an agreement with Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith on a four-year, $94 million, which includes $70 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Nate Taylor on Tuesday (July 15).

The reported agreement came before the NFL's franchise tag deadline on Tuesday, with Smith, 26, as the league's only player on the tag prior to the deal.

"Pro-Bowl guard Trey Smith and the Chiefs reached agreement just ahead of today’s franchise-tag deadline on a four-year, $94 million deal that includes $70 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, ESPN’s sources tell me and @ByNateTaylor. It’s the highest-average annual salary and the most guaranteed money ever awarded to an NFL guard," Schefter wrote on his X account.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins was the only other NFL player to receive a franchise tag prior to receiving his own long-term deal earlier in the offseason. Smith was selected by the Chiefs at No. 226 overall in the sixth-round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has started 17 games during three of his first four seasons, as well as 16 in 2022. The former University of Tennessee standout is a two-time Super Bowl champion and was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2024.
