DeSantis To Pause Opening Camp Blanding
(Clay Co., FL) --Governor Ron DeSantis says he's going to wait to open the new Camp Blanding ICE facility. The Governor says he wants to fill up Alligator Alcatraz before opening the detention center in Clay County. Alligator Alcatraz can hold between three-and-four-thousand migrants. It has not reached capacity yet.
Alligator Alcatraz Detainees Sue For Legal Access
(Ochopee, FL) --Those being held in Alligator Alcatraz are suing to get more access to their lawyers. The ACLU filed a class-action suit yesterday against DHS, ICE and the governor. The suit was filed on behalf of four detainees. The plaintiffs claim their constitutional rights are being violated because they're being denied access to legal counsel.
Protests Planned For Central Florida
(Orlando, FL) --Plans are in place to make sure civil rights protests taking place today go smoothly. The Good Trouble Lives On protests are scheduled to take place across the country, including Central Florida. A woman organizing a protest in Kissimmee promises it'll be safe, but law enforcement agencies plan to be there just in case. In Brevard County, Melbourne Police tell Channel 9 they'll manage traffic flow and address any public safety issues.
Rescuer Describes Broward County Plane Crash
(Pembroke Pines, FL) -- A man who witnessed a plane crash in Broward County is amazed everyone was able to walk away with just minor injuries. Boca Raton Police Detective Scott Hanley was off-duty Sunday when he saw the Cessna crash in Pembroke Pines. He ran to the scene and says he was expecting the worst. A neighbor who ran to the scene handed Hanley an axe, and Hanley used it to shatter one of the windows while the pilot was screaming for help. Hanley and others then rescued the pilot's wife and two teenage children. They were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. Hanley says a community of people put their lives at risk, without hesitation, for people they never met before.
Police: Teens With Flare Guns Torch Yacht
(Bradenton, FL) --Three Florida juveniles are facing charges for allegedly setting a yacht on fire. Police say the eleven, 12 and 14-year-olds fired flare guns from the Green Bridge in Bradenton, igniting the 45-foot vessel on Monday afternoon at Twin Dolphin Marina. Surveillance video and witness tips led detectives to the suspects, who were questioned with their parents. The 14-year-old is charged with arson and firearm offenses, while the younger two face weapons-related counts.
UNO Social Club Las Vegas Plans On Hold
(Las Vegas, NV) --An UNO social club is on hold for now in Las Vegas. Mattel and Palms Casino Resort previously announced that Las Vegas would be the first home of an UNO Social Club, but Mattel said "the casino floor isn't ready for us yet." However, there is an alternative to the UNO-themed suite where the social club plays located near the Palms Casino Resort at Meepleville, which is a card and tabletop community gaming venue. While the UNO Social Club has yet to pan out in Sin City, Mattel shared it is coming to bars in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas, in August.
