Netflix has confirmed its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create "better and cheaper" films and TV shows. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced that the streaming giant utilized generative AI for the first time in its Argentinian sci-fi series, The Eternaut. The series, which depicts survivors of a lethal snowfall, used AI to depict a building collapse in Buenos Aires. Sarandos noted that the visual effects sequence was completed ten times faster than traditional methods, allowing the show to achieve convincing effects on a limited budget.
Sarandos emphasized that AI tools are not replacing jobs but are enhancing production processes, such as pre-visualization and shot planning. He stated, "We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper."
The use of AI in the entertainment industry has been a controversial topic, with some figures like Robert Downey Jr. opposing it, while others like James Cameron support it. The technology was also a key issue during the 2023 dispute between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Hollywood studios. The strike ended with SAG-AFTRA securing protections against AI misuse.
Despite the debate, Netflix's move highlights AI's potential to expand storytelling possibilities and streamline production, as seen in 'The Eternaut'. Sarandos expressed enthusiasm for the technology, stating that creators and audiences were thrilled with the results.
