New Concerns About a Dangerous Highway

There are renewed and urgent calls this week about Highway 67 after the tragedies on the that dangerous roadway last Friday.

A three vehicle crash early in the afternoon left five people dead. A single vehicle crash late Friday night killed at least one person.

There have been concerns about Highway 67 for several decades. Ask anyone who drives on the 67 between Lakeside and Ramona and they will probably tell you that they pay more attention when they’re on that highway where it can be a little scary at times with curves, a downhill slope where speeds can dangerously speed up and an uphill stretch where large trucks and some older vehicles can drop to dangerously slow speeds that can be hazards to drivers going the speed limits.

The causes of these two fatal crashes on Friday are being investigated, but no matter who or what was responsible, the concerns about the safety of the 67 will remain.

And that’s why there are growing concerns now, as there have been in the past when other bad crashes have occurred on the highway.

Over the years, there have been improvements, with new center median barriers and more guard rails and other measures.

But anyone who drives on the 67 would probably agree that more has to be done.
