A popular food spread sold in specialty stores around the country has been recalled from more than a dozen states over the risk it poses to consumer health.
World Market recently issued a recall of its Emek brand Spread Pistachio Cacao Cream with Kadayif, a similar product to Dubai chocolate, due to a possible salmonella contamination, according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
The impacted products were packaged in a glass jar and feature a Best By date of April 01, 2027, UPC 8 69652 10130 1, and Batch No. 250401. They were distributed between June 11 and July 9 and sold mainly in World Market stores in 32 states, including Arizona.
According to the FDA, salmonella can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, but more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections and endocarditis, could occur in rare circumstances.
Anyone who purchased the recalled product is warned not to consume it and either throw it out or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. As of July 14, there have been no reports of illnesses in connection to the recall.
