7/22/25 Blog: Mayor Johnston Conflates Legal With Illegal Immigration

July 22, 2025

MAYOR MIKE JOHNSTON HAS ROSE COLORED GLASSES ON If you listened to his State of the City address you would think Denver is just a ragtag little community fighting the BIG EVIL of the federal government to protect innocent people from being thrown out of the country. It was utter claptrap. It wasn't all delusional, as the Mayor touted a dropping violent crime rate and a slightly lower number of homeless people living on the streets. But he wants us to believe all the evils Denver is dealing with right now are because of the Trump administration, which is poppycock. Read this:

“Today, we face a federal administration that is cutting health care for the sick and food for the hungry, banning books, pulling people off the streets and sending them to prisons without lawyers or hearings,” the mayor said. “Threatening to cut funding for roads and bridges if we teach the stories of Look Young and Sand Creek. Withholding money for terrorism prevention and wildfire response because Denver believes — just as we did in the 1860s — that immigrants can help write the next great chapter of this city.”

Here he clearly conflates legal with illegal immigration and hopes we're too dumb to notice. We are laying off city workers because this mayor and City Council burned through hundreds of millions of dollars giving free stuff to illegal immigrants and shoving homeless people into old hotels. It has nothing to do with the Trump administration. Nice try though.

A FORMER DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER IS FACING CHARGES And this proves that crazy delusional people are capable of getting elected. Sonya Jaquez Lewis resigned earlier this year after bunch of her former and current legislative aides came forward to talk about her abusive behavior. But she didn't resign until after she submitted a lot of paperwork in her defense, and that paperwork is now coming back to bite. What's the issue? She fabricated a letter of support from a former aide to submit with the paperwork. Totally made it up. And now she's facing charges of attempting to influence a public servant, a Class 4 felony. It's nice to know that at least in Colorado politicians can't just get away with stuff. She must have really ticked off members of her party for it to go this far.

NOT EVERYTHING IS RACISM And the case of CU Regent Wanda James being censured is a perfect example of this. Now Black leaders are demanding that CU President Todd Saliman be fired over the censure of black pot shop owner James. She was censured for criticizing the quality of CU's scientific work without providing any data to back up any of her criticisms. That last bit is important, because these Black leaders are suggesting it was somehow racist to censure James because she criticized the University. She did so without merit. That's the problem. This is a group of people searching for racism when there is simply none there.

ABOUT THAT JASON CROW ICE VISIT I probably should have looked at John Fabbricatore's X feed for the rest of the story on the Jason Crow visit where he says he was denied entry on a Sunday of a holiday weekend to the Aurora facility. Here is what John, former ICE director, had to say:

Of course he knew all this and showed up on a holiday weekend so he could be on the news. Weird how he didn't feel the need to check on the facility ONCE during the Biden admin from what I can see. Weird. It's almost like he's just trying to score political points or something. Weird.

COULD TREN DE ARAGUA BE TAKING OVER ANOTHER APARTMENT COMPLEX? It sure seems like that's possible based on this story about a Venezuelan family who are reporting the same kind of violence and trouble they experienced at the last apartment complex they were at before it was raided by police. Read more here but I sure hope Denver is taking this seriously.

THE US MUST MANUFACTURE STUFF And this is a great column about what happens to world powers when they stop manufacturing stuff and it's not good. Read this bit:

But roughly every 120 years, global leadership shifts hands.
Why? Because success breeds complacency. Great societies, like great countries and companies, eventually get comfortable. They ride on the coattails of their success. They offshore everything to developing countries because they have the luxury of prioritizing returns and efficiency over resilience. It’s easy to chase lower costs abroad when the threats seem far away. But when it matters most, these societies find they’ve lost the capacity to build anything that counts.
In the late stages of dominance, comfort replaces urgency. Consistent with Rob Henderson’s luxury beliefs hypothesis, great powers in decline convince themselves they’re still invincible. We think we’re Mike Tyson in his prime—but we’re actually Tyson on the night he lost to Buster Douglas: unprepared, overconfident, and shocked when reality hits back.

This is incredibly accurate and one of the reasons I support President Trump's push to bring back manufacturing. It will never be the way it used to be, with hundreds of workers on a factory floor, but we need to be able to make ships, and tanks, and cars and everything else we need in an increasingly hostile world. Read the whole column here.

BECAUSE THE WORLD IS HEADING FOR WAR When? I don't know. How do I know? I really don't but this column does a nice job of bringing the ramp up that many countries are in the midst of (including ours if you read above) that indicate war may be coming.

WE WERE LIED TO ABOUT WOLVES Especially the parts where they said they wouldn't bring wolves with a history of livestock depredation and that this whole program would cost like 50 bucks (that may be a slight under exaggeration about cost estimates). Now here we are, with livestock being killed on the regular and the cost of this idiotic program ballooning to $8 MILLION in five years. For what? So the animal rights activist vegan First Gentleman can congratulate himself on making livestock ranching even harder in this state? I genuinely think that was the intended outcome all along.

GEN Z SAYS COLLEGE WASN'T WORTH IT And they are drowning in debt with degrees that may already be obsolete because of AI. This is a tough one. One the one hand, I have to wonder what degrees these kids got. Some degrees are just worthless, really. What you pursue matters much more than anyone tells you in college. You can read more here, but they are right when they say this job market is a very very tough one for young people.

AND YET, GEN Z IS OUTPACING PRIOR GENERATIONS IN THIS AREA And that is home ownership. That is really, really smart. So far Gen Z is outpacing Millennials and Gen X on home ownership when compared at the same ages. Read it here.

THIS IS WHY I CAN'T MOVE ON FROM BIDEN Because none of the people in this video compilation of Democrats talking about Joe Biden in the days before he dropped out have been held to account and they all CLEARLY LIED. Over and over again.

THE NEW WOMEN'S PRO SOCCER TEAM HAS A NAME And maybe I don't get it because I'm not a soccer fan but it's Denver Summit FC and yawn. Find out about the colors here.

GOOD FOR TREY AND MATT The Colorado native creators and owners of Casa Bonita have struck a streaming deal with Paramount+ to bring South Park to the streamer for the eye popping cost of $1.5 BILLION. Good for them, they've created something magical in both South Park and the revival of Casa Bonita.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS This is a fascinating article ostensibly about the different political leanings of young men and women but it is so much more than that. It does a deep dive into the things that make us act the way we do, and the news for boys is not great right now. Read it here.

NOW DEFUNDING NPR IS RACIST And I can't stop laughing at this story by David Strom on HotAir.com. No, really, defunding NPR whose audience skews 90% white, is racist according to the super white Liberal Woman who runs it. Read it here if you need a good laugh.

@brutamerica

A Denver museum accidentally discovered a rare, intact dinosaur fossil 763 feet below its parking lot during geothermal drilling. The fossil, from a small plant-eater that lived 67.5 million years ago, is now on display. #DinosaurDiscovery #DenverMuseum #FossilFind #Paleontology #GeothermalEnergy

YOU ARE THE FATHER! This story is very sweet. A family who lost their beloved family dog Rufus. Just a few days later they spotted a rescue that looked EXACTLY like Rufus so they adopted the pet. They were curious so they did a DNA test and found out Rufus was the dog's dad!
