Former Trump defense attorney Alina Habba has been replaced as the interim U.S. Attorney in New Jersey, as reported by The Washington Post. Habba, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, did not secure the necessary votes from the state's federal judges to continue in her role beyond the initial 120-day term, which expired this week. Chief Judge Renée Marie Bumb announced that Desiree Leigh Grace, previously Habba's first assistant, will take over the position.

Habba, known for her vocal support of President Trump, faced controversy during her tenure. She charged Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Democratic Representative Monica McIver, over their interactions with federal immigration agents, which led to criticism from the judge in Baraka's case. The charges against Baraka were dropped, but the prosecution against McIver continues.

The decision to replace Habba is unusual, marking only the second such instance since Trump's second term began. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche criticized the judges' decision, suggesting it was politically motivated. Despite her replacement, Habba may still find a role within the Trump administration, similar to previous appointees who were reassigned after being rejected by judges.

Habba, who previously represented Trump in high-profile cases, has faced legal challenges herself, including a civil lawsuit from Baraka for false arrest and defamation. Her legal career has been marked by controversy, including a settled lawsuit with a former waitress at Trump's Bedminster golf club.
