Four American cruise ship passengers were arrested in Bermuda for allegedly possessing drugs powerful enough to sedate an elephant. The Bermuda Police Service reported that the passengers from a Carnival Cruise Lines ship were found with a significant quantity of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. Among the substances discovered were the synthetic opioid carfentanyl, vape pens, and suspected THC gummies.
Carfentanyl is known to be approximately 100 times stronger than fentanyl and is typically used to sedate large animals, such as elephants. Bermuda Police Service Acting Detective Superintendent Derricka Burns emphasized the danger of carfentanyl, stating that even tiny amounts can be deadly. "This seizure may have prevented a potential tragedy," Burns remarked.
The drugs were allegedly intended for distribution on the island.
The Carnival Legend, operating out of Baltimore, was the cruise ship involved, although police did not specify which ship carried the arrested passengers. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about drug trafficking and the potential risks posed by potent synthetic opioids.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in preventing the distribution of such dangerous substances. Carnival Cruise Lines has not yet commented on the arrests.
