Police are actively searching for a suspect after a shooting at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque left one person dead and another injured early Friday (July 25). The incident occurred at the Casas del Rio student housing complex, prompting the university to close its central campus and advise students to shelter in place. The University of New Mexico Police Department (UNMPD) is leading the investigation, with multiple law enforcement agencies on the scene.
The shooting resulted in one fatality, while the other victim's injuries are not life-threatening. The university has urged anyone with information to contact UNMPD at 505-277-2241 or Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers at 505-843-7867.
The university has about 23,000 students and remains on high alert as authorities continue their search for the suspect. Students and staff are advised to monitor their UNM email, text messages, and the LoboGuardian app for real-time updates.
KOB reports that the Health Sciences Center remains open despite the campus closure. The university has taken these measures out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of its community.
