Drake will open up about his time on the hit teen drama "Degrassi: The Next Generation" for an upcoming documentary.
The Toronto International Film Festival recently announced its lineup, including a fresh documentary called Degrassi: Whatever It Takes. According to TIFF's website, the documentary is directed by Lisa Rideout and features "Creators, superfans, and stars including Aubrey 'Drake' Graham" who "delve deep into all things Degrassi in this engaging history of the Canadian show that changed teen TV." Drake starred in the show from 2001 to 2008. He played "Jimmy Brooks," a star basketball player from a wealthy family who becomes paralyzed after he's injured in a school shooting.
Drake was a series regular on the show for seven seasons. However, he reportedly threatened to leave the show shortly after his character was confined to a wheelchair. In 2021, A.V. Club spoke to several cast members and writers who worked on the show during Drizzy's tenure. One writer in particular alleged Drake's lawyer sent a letter threatening legal action over his character's circumstances. After speaking with him about his role, the writer said Drake backed down, and he remained on the show for another two seasons. He ultimately left after his music career took off.
Over the years, Drake has referred to his time on the show. He's posted photos with his former cast mates and even named one of his popular collaborations with 21 Savage, "Jimmy Cooks." However, he has yet to set the record straight on the rumors surrounding his stance on "Jimmy Brooks." Will he finally address it in the documentary?
Degrassi: Whatever It Takes will make its world debut during the Toronto International Film Festival on September 4-14.
