The father of Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer killed in a shooting in Midtown Manhattan, suffered a stroke upon learning of his son's death. Officer Islam, a 36-year-old father of two with a third child on the way, was one of four people killed in the shooting on Monday (July 28). His cousin, Muhammad Mainul Islam, shared that the elder Islam had the stroke after seeing his son's body, as reported by The New York Post.

Officer Islam was working a private security detail at the time of the incident. The shooter, Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, targeted the building, reportedly aiming for the NFL offices but entered the wrong elevator banks. He killed four people, including Islam, before taking his own life. Tamura had a history of mental illness and left a note indicating a grievance with the NFL over a claim related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy..

Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, served in the NYPD's 47th precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam for his service and sacrifice, describing him as a hero. The New York Post reported that Islam's pregnant wife was also hospitalized following the incident. The family is deeply affected by the tragedy, with no further details on the conditions of Islam’s father and wife available at this time.
