Roland Schmidt, 76, from Stillman Valley, Illinois, is facing first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting his daughter-in-law, Christine Moyer, 45, during a family wedding. The incident occurred outside the Marriott Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. According to the Schaumburg Police Department, officers responded to a shooting report at approximately 10:15 p.m. and found Moyer with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead.

Schmidt was subdued by a bystander and taken into custody at the scene. A firearm was recovered. According to WMAQ, Schmidt's firearm owner's identification (FOID) card was expired at the time of the incident.

Authorities revealed that Schmidt was upset over Moyer's divorce filing against his son, which led to the tragic event. Prosecutors described the shooting as "execution style" and in front of several family members.

During a court hearing on Monday (July 28), prosecutors alleged that Schmidt had planned the attack for several days and intended to take his own life afterward. Despite arguments from Schmidt's public defender citing his age and medical issues, Judge Ellen Mandeltort ordered him to be held without bail. Schmidt is expected to appear in court again on August 22.
