What to Learn From San Diego's Tsunami Advisory

July 30, 2025

For anyone who has lived in San Diego or anywhere along the California coast, for only a few years, hearing the first alerts about a Tsunami Watch Tuesday evening that soon turned into a Tsunami Advisory, a little more serious thing, was likely a little startling. And many were probably wondering what exactly is a Tsunami.

Something that’s as hard to spell as it is hard to explain.

A lot of what some people may think about when they think of Tsunami’s come from disaster films where giant waves threaten the world.

And while they can be disastrous at times as in Japan a few years ago, most of the time their impact is not anywhere near that kind of thing. We did have that one back in 1964 that raised sea levels by six feet along some of the San Diego coast and damaged some boats.

But now, having just had a Tsunami Advisory in San Diego, which do happen from time to time, you’ve heard the people along the beach on the radio, and a lot of folks asking more about Tsunami’s.

A lot of people in San Diego today are saying it was the first time they’ve ever been in a place where a Tsunami advisory was issued, with others who know what it is, saying they could scratch off a Tsunami from their weather experience list.

But this event is a reminder, just like floods and wildfires, to always be prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings our way.
