The Faster Trip to San Diego’s Airport
August 1, 2025
Driving to and from San Diego International Airport during the last few years has often been an experience of facing traffic congestion on Harbor Drive, and navigating through construction detours, and watching for signs of where to turn to get to the terminals.
You almost have needed a ground control tower for drivers like the flight control tower near the runway for pilots.
But the situation is now expected to be vastly improved with the opening of the three-lane direct roadway without stoplights that lets you bypass Harbor Drive and go directly to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
And as the San Diego Union Tribune reported that new roadway is estimated to mean 45,000 fewer vehicles on North Harbor Drive itself making for easier access to Harbor Island and other locations beyond the airport.
San Diego International has come a very long away from when it was just known as Lindbergh Field, and not aging well since the 1960s, and in desperate need of expansion and modernization.
But it has happened with much of the new Terminal 1 about to open that replaces the old and way undersized old Terminal 1 along with new parking structures.
And now the separate roadway that helps get you to departures and arrivals without as many hassles.
San Diego’s airport has travelled a long trip to get to where it is. And now we shouldn’t have to do that on Harbor Drive.
