A fire erupted under a PATH train in Jersey City, New Jersey, early Monday (August 4), causing panic among passengers and leading to the evacuation of the train. The blaze began at 6:19 a.m. ET under an eastbound train at the Newport PATH Station, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Passengers were evacuated onto the platform as smoke filled the train cars.

Thirteen individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation, with nine being hospitalized for further evaluation. Shocking video footage from inside the train showed passengers urging the conductor to open the doors as smoke spread, creating a yellow haze. When the doors finally opened, passengers fled onto the platform, leaving belongings behind in their rush to safety.

The fire caused a suspension of service on the Hoboken-WTC and JSQ-33rd Street lines, affecting commuters traveling between Midtown Manhattan and Jersey City, and between the World Trade Center and Hoboken. Service was restored by 11 a.m.

The Port Authority is continuing its investigation into the cause of the train fire.
