What Parents Are Saying About What Their Kids Do at School

August 4, 2025

You’re seeing more and more stories about use of smartphones in school..

From California to Texas and all across the country, there are new laws and more moves to restrict students use of their phones while at school.

And according to new report at Time.com, this effort is being driven more and more by parents with school leaders now having to follow the new laws or respond to pushes from parents to do something.

This report points to a Pew Research Center study in July that found that three-quarters of adults in the U.S. now support preventing middle schoolers and high schoolers from using their phones during class. That’s up from two-thirds of adults last year.

The survey found that 44 percent support banning phones for the entire school day and about 65 percent of Americans say they think phone-free schools would improve students’ social skills, grades, and behavior in class

San Diego Unified and some other local districts have already or are about to implement new rules for using cell phones at school while addressing the desire of parents and kids to be able to reach each other in an emergency.

One thing we’ve learned about the emergence of technology, from cell phones to AI, is that it brings with it, a need to be wise about how we use it and not abuse it.
