Driver Killed While Trying To Set New Land Speed Record In Utah

Chris Raschke, a seasoned driver, died on Sunday (August 3) while attempting to set a land speed record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. Raschke was driving a vehicle called the Speed Demon at 283 mph when he lost control about two and a half miles into the run. Despite receiving medical attention at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Southern California Timing Association, which has organized the "Speed Week" event since the late 1940s.
The Bonneville Salt Flats, located about 100 miles west of Salt Lake City, are renowned for their flat, glasslike surface, attracting drivers from around the world aiming to set speed records. Raschke, 60, was a respected figure in the racing community with over four decades of experience. He worked at Ventura Raceway in the early 1980s and became a driver for the Speed Demon team, gaining recognition for his skills in various racing disciplines.
The incident is under investigation by the Southern California Timing Association and the Tooele County Sheriff's Office. The association's president, Keith Pedersen, described Raschke as a significant figure in the racing community. The event, which began on Saturday, will continue through Friday.
