The Backyard Battles in San Diego

August 5, 2025

Have you noticed the growing number of stories in recent days about neighborhoods battling proposed developments?

On Monday, a group called Neighbors for a Better Pacific Beach sued the City of San Diego to block a controversial giant sized ADU, accessory dwelling unit, planned in PB. The neighbors say that with more than 100 ADU units, it would risk public safety and hurt the environment in PB.

Last weekend in San Diego’s Middletown neighborhood, there was a rally by dozens of homeowner marching against a proposal to build a 14-story, 160-unit apartment building in a neighborhood of single family homes. One of them telling the Times of San Diego, that the 14 story high rise “does not fit into the community.”

Battles over new proposals in neighborhoods are not new, but in recent times, with the price of homes in San Diego and the controversy over ADU’s, there have been more of them.

And more and more homeowners appear very willing to fight developers and the city. And these factors have stirred up disputes between NIMBY’s and YIMBY’s: The Not in My Backyarders versus the Yes in my Backyarders.

If you live in a San Diego neighborhood, stay tuned.
