Zambia Chimps Are Creating Their Fashion Trends
August 6, 2025
At a wildlife orphanage in northern Zambia, a group of chimpanzees has captured the attention of researchers for their unique sense of style. According to scientists studying the chimps, some have been decorating themselves with sticks and blades of grass, placing them in their ears and even their behinds, then walking around as if they are showing off a fashion statement.
At first, researchers thought the behavior was unusual, but they soon noticed other chimps joining in. What started with a few individuals quickly became a group trend.
Some researchers believe this could be a case of social learning, where the chimps are copying the behaviors of their human caretakers. Others say it may be a form of self-expression or a way for chimps to show social rank.
