Former MLB player David Justice, Halle Berry's ex-husband, is speaking out about his divorce from the actress.
During a recent appearance on Matt Barnes' "All the Smoke" podcast, Justice revealed the reason behind their split in 1997.
Justice said the "honeymoon state" ended about five months after they got married in 1993, when he began considering having children with Berry.
"My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast," Justice said on the podcast. "So, I'm looking at my mom — and I'm a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?"
"Then I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' " he continued. "At that time, as a young guy — she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues."
The former Atlanta Braves player recalled proposing to Berry soon after they met in May 1992.
"She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months," Justice said. "I said OK, because I couldn't say no. Who's going to say no at that time?"
"I don't know if my heart was really into it, but I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment," he added.
Justice, who later married Rebecca Villalobos Justice in 2001, also suggested that their careers played a role in their split.
"We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it," he said.
"We never had any major issues like that," Justice continued. "It's just... because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her."
Following her divorce from Justice, Berry was married to singer/actor Eric Benét, with whom she later split. Berry also tied the knot with Olivier Martinez, with whom she shares 11-year-old son Maceo, but the two split in 2015. Berry also shares her 17-year-old daughter, Nahla, with ex Gabriel Aubry. She is currently in a relationship with singer-songwriter Van Hunt.
Earlier this year, Berry spoke out about comments that she "can't keep a man."
"I’ve heard people say, 'Something must be wrong with Halle Berry, she can’t keep a man.' Who's to say I want to keep a man? I don’t want to keep the wrong man. Like, I’m not crazy, right? So when you find that you make a mistake — we all make mistakes. We have a right to say, ‘Oh God, this was a mistake. Let me start again.’ We have the right to do that," Berry said during a February appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
