Reds: That's a killer
August 12, 2025
Phillies 4 Reds 1
What a tragic breakdown of defense and managing.
Gavin Lux misplayed a two out 8th inning double, and then airmailed a throw over the head of Tyler Stephenson that allowed the go ahead run to score and sabotage what would have been a huge opening statement to a crucial homestand.
The Phillies, who trailed 1-0 entering the 8th, plated four runs in the inning. 43,800 fans were sent home stunned.
The Reds (62-58) fall two games back of the Mets for the third Wild Card.
Abbott was filthy and efficient, before losing the shutout bid on a two-out 8th inning double/misplay. He stayed on the game following game tying double, and then allowed the go ahead single to Tre Turner with Lux airmailing the throw over the head of Tyler Stephenson.
Tony Santillan entered and served up a two-run homer to Kyle Schwarber.
Why Lux, their worst outfield defender, was still in a 1-0 game in the 8th is beyond me.
Why Abbott was left in the game once it was tied, at 99 pitches and to face right handed Tre Turner is beyond me.
The Reds defense had made three stellar plays earlier, including Noelvi Marte throwing out Bryce Harper at the plate on a double play to end the 7th.
Abbott: 7.2 IN, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 104 pitches.
Retired 1st 12 batters. 28 pitches/22 strikes 1st 3 innings.

Defense:
Hayes diving stop into foul territory/throw
Elly charge/bare hand throw
Marte throw out of Harper at plate in 7th
Offense: 7 H, 2 BB, 5 K
41st time scoring fewer than three runs.
Lux: 3 H, RBI
McLain: 2 ground outs to 3rd, infield pop up
They got the tying run to the plate in the 8th, but Marte grounded out.
How they scored:
