What makes a restaurant stand out? Maybe it's the history of the place, dating back decades and rarely changing its beloved menu much to the delight on longtime diners, or perhaps it is because the eatery draws in famous faces along with its everyday guests looking to sample delicious food in an inviting environment. Whatever the case may be, some restaurants offer a special quality that customers just can't get enough of.

Using reviews, awards and accolades as well as first-hand experience, LoveFood compiled a list of the "most fascinating" restaurant in every state, the unique spots that "tell a story" whether from past famous diners and storied histories or making their mark on the culinary scene with groundbreaking dishes.

According to the site, the most fascinating restaurant in all of North Carolina is Skylight Inn BBQ. This Ayden eatery has been a staple of the community since the '40s, serving whole-hog style barbecue that holds its own amid a region known for its delicious BBQ. Skylight Inn BBQ, which has a 4.7 star rating on Google and more than 2,000 reviews, is located at 4618 Lee Street.

Here's what the site had to say about this "interesting" eatery:

"Barbecue is everywhere in North Carolina, so it takes somewhere special to stand out — and the Skylight Inn is definitely that. Opened in 1947 by 17-year-old Pete Jones, Skylight is still known to locals as Pete Jones' BBQ, and it serves, in true NC style, whole hog barbecue — so expect plenty of crispy skin mixed in with your perfectly chopped meat."
