A Note From a Principal Worth Reading

August 20, 2025

With most kids back in school now, some wise words were offered this week from the principal and former teacher at an East County elementary school that were published in the San Diego Union Tribune.

His words sound like something that should be in a text book for all teachers and parents.

“I’ve seen firsthand, he says, “how education isn’t just our most powerful tool of upward mobility; it’s the foundation of our democracy”.

This former teacher who taught in classroom for a decade, he says that for teachers, “it’s about creating a welcoming classroom environment, which is why the first two weeks of school are devoted to social-emotional learning and belonging.”.

He says kids come from “a wide variety of backgrounds, and the more teachers can meet them where they are, the more likely it is that students will succeed academically and socially.”

And for parents, this now principal says “the name of the game is forthrightness. Schools have excellent resources to help students with a variety of challenges, but we can’t assist if we aren’t aware”…..adding that, “Undercommunication is a much bigger problem than overcommunication”.He tells parents, “If your child has an issue that’s affecting his performance or attitude toward school, let us know.”
